Winter Driving Program

This program is designed to prepare drivers to handle the numerous challenges that Canadian winters pose. Providing a basic understanding of vehicle dynamics, it covers the adjustments drivers need to make when navigating slippery conditions. The Winter Driving Program focuses on developing a realistic assessment of driving risks and of the driver’s capabilities. Topics covered include winter equipment, the use of ABS and ESC, maximizing visibility and acquiring unique strategies to reduce the danger posed from other drivers. Common winter-driving myths are distinguished– and debunked. A wide variety of methods are used to assist drivers to adopt a safer approach to driving in winter conditions. These include a quiz, a worksheet, videos, discussions and hands-on driving in both our controlled site and on public roads.

Winter Driving Program Plus

The underlying basis for safe driving in winter are sound, fundamental driving habits. In addition to the material covered in the main course, the “Plus Program” includes an on-road evaluation of the driver’s habits aimed at reinforcing the positives and providing suggestions for an even safer driving approach.

Did You Know?
The program does not focus on skid control. Skid-control training has been real world tested and shown to lead to an increased incidence of collisions–following the training. This negative result held true everywhere from Norway to Finland to the United States. It is believed that such training leads to overconfidence. Participants do remember that they have been trained to deal with these situations but as typically occurs with any new skill learned but not practiced for extended periods of time, they forget the actual content of the training.
